The swirling dervish who at one point could not walk

“I have lived on the edge of insanity, wanting to know reasons,
knocking on a door. It opens.
I’ve been knocking from the inside.”

-Rumi

A few months ago I came across a really powerful documentary series by Oprah Winfrey called ‘Belief’. In that series there was a woman named Karen Cavanagh who had a serious accident where the doctors thought she would never walk again. However, at some point, while in and out of a coma, she heard the words of the poet Rumi resonate inside her head. Eventually she came to interpret the poem as speaking to her in some way. Years later she is now a swirling dervish who can no longer feel any pain.
